Coromandel - too precious to mine

The Coromandel Ranges are a scenic treasure, but the ranges are also geologically interesting to miners of precious metals.

During the 1980's the Coromandel community fought long and hard to protect their environment from the heavy industry that is mining. The local Council introduced a District Plan that prohibited mining in Coastal and Conservation land. The Crown Minerals Act also sought to restrict mining in the peninsula.

Recent judgements and political manoeuvering by the Minerals Industry and the Mininstry of Economic Development have reawakened the threat of mining.

The Coromandel community and all who value this rugged and beautiful peninsula, must now stand up again to protect the conservation and natural values of this area. Heavy industry and the toxic legacy of mining have no place on our peninsula.
